Week Four - Using The WWW

Lecture -
In today's lecture we learnt about
The differences between the internet and the web, the history of the web, defining the WWW and web protocols. We also learnt about the protocol of the internet. We covered the different types of domains that are used and the different types of web browsers. We learnt about the browser interface including tabs and bookmarks.

Tutorial -

I beleive the information on
http://haggishunt.scotsman.com/ is incorrect. I also found similar information on the websitehttp://www.twas.com.au/phorum/read.php?14,161,161. It explains that the most common mistake about haggis is that it nenver really existed and is made only form sheep intestine. There is no such animal as haggis, is a national dish of scotland. Haggis hunt happens when they hatch (30 November) until 25 January. This is a mythical season that they have on the website where people can look for the haggis in the online game.

Above is the homepage of the website that tells us about the season. To the left of the print screen you can see 10 squares, these are videos of variouse places, where haggii can supposedly be spoted.

This website appears to be authentic by having facts about the haggis.

In red i have cirled the heading of the facts page. When i read this i started to beleive that this animal actually existed. This shows how easily web pages can make their site look authentic by making things look like real facts.

Above is a screen print from a link found on themolossia wesite. This is a link to teachers. In this window it explains how the information about molossia is fake although the place molossia does exist. This website is used as an example of how imformation on website can be misrepresented as real facts.

Before i entered the site
http://www.martinlutherking.org/ i thaught that the information on the site would be authentic facts about Martin Luther King. When i looked at the URL i did think that because it is an organisation website the information may be quite bias.

When i first entered the site it was similar to what i expected. The information presented included some factual information. There was a link on the site called Rap Lyrics. When you go into this link there are numerouse raps about white people and how they should all be killed. This type of thing would not be on a higly informational website so therefore i began to question the authenticity of this website.

After researching martin luther king i found a lot of similar information on other sites - minus the raps. I also worked out that the information on the website is against martin luther king. This is presented under the link of 'The truth about martin luther king.' The main heading on this link is 'The Beast as Saint.' In the text it explains how there is a public holiday dedicated to him but to no other president that has also been assasinated. This allowed me to see that the writers of this site do not beleive that he is deserving of a public holiday. This then reinforcing their opinions and views.

Above i have done a screen print of this link wiuth a red circle around the heading.

I dont think this website would be an adequate scource for the basis of an academic assignment.

Week Three - Online Libraries & Databases

Lecture -

To start our lecture today we had to answer three starting questions once again.
The questions are based on online libraries and databases. I had never really used an online library or database before so i wasnt really sure about what to do. We went through the adavanteages and disadvantages of using an online library.
Some of the advantages of using an online library in comparison to an search engine is the information will 80% of the time be reliable and certified. Another good reason is that the information is very easyily accesable. Instead of going into the library we can acces all of the information from your own computer. There are also disadvantages of using an online library. For some of the online libraries you might have to subscribe to retreive certain data. The online databases also don't come up on world wide search engines.

Below are some typers of online journals;

  • Virtual library

  • Medical library

  • pscychology library

  • Internet public library

  • Art

  • Music

Tutorial -

In the tutorial today we learnt how to use the library online. We went through how to access it off the ecu website.

Above i have done a screen shot of the ecu library home page. Here is where we can access major databases, search for books in our own library along with many other things.

Below are ten useful tips that will help us use the library. i found these on the library website.

1.Items that can't be borrowed like ecyclopedias, dictoinaries etc. These items have an R prefix to the call number.

2.Located on ECU LibraryOnline and includes a wide range of websites selected by librarians based on their credibility and value to ECU students. Material is arranged by subject.

3.Students are able to borrow from most collections on presentation of a Student ID Card.

4.Library materials may be copied within copyright regulations using photocopiers (paper and transparency), microform reader printers and computer printers.

5.The library negotiates agreements with other libraries to enhance the service to its students.

6. Online referencing guide.

7. The libraray offers Databases for academic research

8. Search tip- Use only particular keywords

9. Podcasts - Can give tours of campuses and educate new students as to whats on offer.

10. Searching other univesity's journal articles.

I think that the type of people that may use the MEDline website are those looking to further educate themselves about a particular disease or condition. If people cannot accesses a doctor immediately this website can help to inform a victim of the possible illness they are suffering and the outcome.

Reading 1 -

This reading is an article taken off the BBC news website. The article gives some helpful tips of how to search the internet. This article encourages readers to conduct a number of searches rather than just typing in one keyword and clicking a button. The article also addresses the issues that arise when searching the web.

Reading 2 -

This website offers quick search tips for the internet. The site provides tips to add to keywords when searching on search engines. This website is very informative when it comes to searching. The tips will become useful when we start researching at university.

Week Two - Office Applications

Lecture:

In todays lecture we started with some discussion questions. We had to answer them with the person next to us. It was beneficial answering these to begin with as it got our brains going.
We went throught the different types of browser there are and types of programs run by microsoft. Our lecturer also informed us about the comlications that may occur when using windows 03-07 and then switching to vista. I found this really important as i had some problems when trying to open some of the lecture notes as i have vista. I now know to save my work on vist as 03-07 so i can access it else where.

Above you can see where i have clicked on file, save as, and save as microsoft 03-07.

Tutorial:

In the tutorial today we went through the shortcuts of microsoft. below i have listed some of the ones we learnt;

Control + left or right arrow = Move between words

Control + up or down arrow = jump between paragraphs

Control + home button = jump to start of whole document

Control +end = jump to end of whole document

Control + Shift + Home = highlight whole scentence

Control + x = cut

Control + c = copy

Control + v = paste

Control + z = undo

Control + y = re-do

I already but it was good that we went thru these as it gave others a chance to speed up the process when using the microsoft programs without stopping to use their mouse.

In microsoft work we learnt how to insert a page break, header and footer and also page numbers.

Above you can see how on a simple word document i have added a footer a header and a page number.

Inserting a page break into a word document has been a very effective way of preventing disruption to the document. Many student may have previously just pressed enter in order to add something to a page. When this happens it can ruin the format of the text by pushing the next page down and displaying the enters at the top of the next. Instead of doing that you can simply insert a page break.

Above is an example of how pressing enter can alter the text. In bold i have shown har far the text has been pushed down due to the text that was inserted on page 1.

Gary also showed us how to add a cover page to our assighnment. When you click on insert there are many options that come up. By clicking on cover page you can choose your desired page and insert it to the top of your document.

Above is a print screen of the cover page i have insterted. I have also opened the tap 'cover page' in insert to show where to find it. The red arrow shows where the cover page icon is located.

In this tute the most important thing i learnt was how to insert a Table of Contents. To add a table of contents to your document you must highlight a heading you want to be first and select text type 'heading 1'. Continue down the document, in order and highligh what you want to be in you table of contents. Once you have done this click on references and click on 'Table of Contents'. You can then select your desired set out and then you table of contents will be inserted.

Above i have inserted a print screen of my table of contents. This is shown with the blue arrow. The red arrow also shows how to access the table of contents in word.

Towards the end of the tute we went into exel and went thru a few helpful shortcuts. When you type a number or a weekday into a cell you can drag the cursor down and you can select whether to copy or to 'fill series'. To 'fill series' means that the computer will automatically change the number or month to concequtive order. I found this convenient as you dont have to type every single day or number.

Above is a print screen of exel. In colum a i typed monday dragged the curser to number 10 and clicked copy cells. In colum B i typed monday alos, dragged the mouse down to 10 but then clicked fill cells. So in colum B the days go in order.

I enjoyed this tute as i picked up a few shortcuts that i dint already know. When typing our assighnments these shortcuts will become very helpful and time saving as we don't have to stop and reach for our mouse.

Week Two Reading 1 -

This reading gave us general tips when using MS Word. There are tips about the cursor, hyperlinks, undo and many more. This reading is a simple way of learning how to use Microsoft Word Package.

Week Two Reading 2 -

This reading is a tip sheet for using photo's in Adobe Photo shop. This aticle outlines the types of image formats and how to save a specific photo.

Week One - Intoduction to UPC 0004

Lecture-
Today's lecture introduced us to using computers at university. We went through the course outline and were given a breif overview of the course ahead.

Tutorial-
Today's tute was an introduction to the unit. We went through the general outline of the course and what is expected of us through out the semester.
Gary then showed us how got log onto black board. Blackboard is our student based Internet site where we can access all of our uni information and student web mail.

Here is a screen print of my ecu blackboard home page. In red i have circled the hyperlink to this courses information.

After we learnt how to set up blackboard we then went into our student emails. To familiarise us with this application Gary asked us to email 5 other students within our class. This also made us interact and get to know a few of the other students. I thought this was a positive activity as it made us relax and talk to our other class mates.

Above is a screen shot of what our ecu email looks like.

Gary then showed us how to print a screen. To do this you press the 'print screen' button on the top right hand side of the keyboard. Then you have to open up paint and paste it in there. We use paint so that we can edit the screen print however we want. We then saved it on our desktop for later use.

above is a screen print of the paint workshop used to edit our screen prints.

Next in this tute we set up our online blogs. The website we used is http://www.blogger.com/. Our blog will be used as a weekly journal of what occurs in each class and lecture. This website is fairly easy to use and we can conveniently make new weekly posts.

Above is a screen print of my own blog.

This tutorial was and introduction to our assessment and allowed us to familiarise ourselves with the computers we will be using all semester.

Reading One-

This reading introduces us to all of the different things on the internet. From languages to file types it makes us aware of the many things that are on the internet.

Reading Two-

This reading intorduces us to how the internet works. The site explains how things work and how our computers operate. This website introduces the importance of security and protections when using the internet.
